SERVE in South Dallas & Beyond

Updated: Mar 24, 2020

Hello Volunteers of Highland Park United Methodist Church

and our many Partner Churches ...

Several area agencies that HPUMC works with have an increased need for volunteers and supplies. More people are in need and many regular volunteers are retired people who have been advised to stay at home to avoid personal risk.

DONATIONS OF SUPPLIES:

Supplies listed that are requested for donation can be taken directly to the organization or placed in the blue bin (labeled for grocery bags but other items are welcome as well) under the covered drive at church.  We will ask volunteers to deliver collected supplies to our partners from there.

Crossroads Community Services ...

is a large food bank and food bank hub that HPUMC has partnered with for many years.  They not only provide direct consumer assistance, but also help to stock many community food pantries throughout the region.

VOLUNTEER

SUPPLIES THEY NEED:

hand sanitizer, wipes, protective gloves, etc.; medium-sized boxes for family food boxes (14” W. x 11” D. x 9” H. is a good size), clear box-sealing tape

Aunt Bette’s Pantry ...

at St. Philip’s School & Community Center provides pantry staples in a food desert region near Fair Park.

VOLUNTEER

The Food Pantry at CitySquare ...

has an increased need for volunteers and would like anyone who is already a CitySquare volunteer to help if able.  If you're an existing volunteer and not considered high-risk (as defined by the CDC), please email Kiara Jones at kijones@citysquare.org to learn more. They have instituted a temporary halt on adding new volunteers, so if you are new to CitySquare you would not be eligible.

SUPPLIES THEY NEED:

paper, plastic or reusable grocery bags

The Wilkinson Center Food Pantry ...

will need volunteers starting the week of March 30th and can also use donations of items in greater demand than usual.

VOLUNTEER

SUPPLIES THEY NEED:

baby formula, adult diapers, kid's snack foods, and other kid-friendly nonperishable food (cereal, peanut butter and jelly, tuna, etc.), reusable grocery bags

Meals on Wheels of Dallas

has an urgent need for drivers to deliver meals to homebound seniors, as many of their volunteers fall into the high-risk demographic group and are unable to deliver meals at this time.  Volunteers can deliver as little or as often as their schedules allow.  If you are willing to step in, you should start by creating a volunteer account – here’s how:

VOLUNTEER

Select “I’m with a Group”

Fill out the form – When asked “Which group are you with?”, from the group name dropdown, select “Highland Park UMC”.

Complete the form by creating your account. (Hint: selected password must have at least 10 characters.)

Complete ONLINE training (Due to the Caronavirus, on-site training has been suspended.).

Because a background check must be completed before you can begin volunteering, please go ahead and set up your account!

Open Door Preschool

located in Grace United Methodist Church, is hoping to re-open for childcare on March 30th.  They provide childcare for a number of healthcare workers near Baylor Hospital, so the need is great!

VOLUNTEER

Open Door has requested volunteers to assist staff in doing a deep clean and sanitation of facilities.  If you are not considered high-risk (as defined by the CDC) and are under age 60, please contact Gretchen weaver at gretchen@odpreschool.org to volunteer.

INFRARED THERMOMETER!

The preschool must have an infrared thermometer in order to re-open, but they are in very short supply these days.  If you have one to donate or that they could use until they are able to obtain one, it would make ALL the difference!  Please contact Gretchen Weaver gretchen@odpreschool.org directly if you can meet this need.

As we learn of more needs we will continue to pass them along - thank you for being the church to our neighbors in need!
