PSALM 51:10-19 read by #1

Soak me in your laundry and I’ll come out clean, scrub me and I’ll have a snow-white life. Tune me in to foot-tapping songs, set these once-broken bones to dancing. Don’t look too close for blemishes, give me a clean bill of health. God, make a fresh start in me, shape a new beginning from the chaos of my life. Don’t throw me out with the trash, or fail to breathe holiness in me. Bring me back from gray exile, put a fresh wind in my sails! Give me a job teaching rebels your ways so the lost can find their way home. Commute my death sentence, God, my salvation God, and I’ll sing anthems to your life-giving ways. Unbutton my lips, dear God; I’ll let loose with your praise.

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

B) FIRST LESSON: EXODUS 14:19-28, led by #2 & #3
  • 2) Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long. Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea.

  • 3) During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. He jammed the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward it, and the Lord swept them into the sea. The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.

This is the Word of the Lord.

THANKS BE TO GOD.

(*ready to add in voices by Children & Parents)

D) MESSAGE for the YOUNG at HEART, led by Yarlette Bryant, Sydney Brown and the gifted Goffney Girls
E) LITURGY & PRAYER led by #4 & #5
  • 5) The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

AND ALSO WITH YOU

  • 4) We gather together and share a CREED to remember that in God, we have a Companion who will never fail us and will be with us always. It is a CREED that reminds us that death is never the final answer, and the hope springs eternal for those who follow the God of Resurrection and Life.

I BELIEVE IN GOD,

the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST,

God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT,

the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

  • 5) We take this moment to confess our sins: Do you confess that you are captive to sin and cannot free yourself from this trap of sin and death, at least not in this life? Do you confess that you have sinned against God in anger, rebellion, frustration, doubt and fear.

WE DO.

  • 4) Do you confess that, because your neighbor fails to love in the way that God commands, that you also have not loved your neighbor as yourself? Do you confess that you struggle to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength?

WE DO.

  • 5) Do you ask, with the help of Jesus Christ, Forgive us, Lord, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

WE DO. AMEN.

  • 4) Brothers and sisters hear this grace: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you and for His sake, God forgives you all of your sins. As a called disciple of Christ I declare the entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN.

F) GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 14:22-33 read by #6

Halle, Halle, Halle-lujah, led by Tanya Browne & Dolphene Davis

Hallelujah, Salvation & Glory, (Revelation 19:1) led by Pastor Todd *

(*ready to add in voices by Choir Members)

Our Gospel Lesson comes from the Matthew in the 14th Chapter.

GLORY TO YOU, O LORD!

  • 6) Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

PRAISE TO YOU, O CHRIST.

G) SECOND SONG: Wade In the Water, led by "Undefined" an all male group from the Albany State University, singing Wade in the Water, Ain't Going to Let Nobody, and Soon I Will be Done!

Please MUTE and SING along

H) SERMON:
I Wade ON the Water, led by Pastor Todd

[Chorus] I need air. I just wanna live again. A little air.

Maybe I can love again. I need air. So I can breathe again.

  • 1) I've seen the light, that shines from the Son. You're the moon in the night, and life; Without you near me, can't see clearly, oh so weary. I suffocate and I can't breathe, Hallucinate and I can't see, Resuscitate, can you help me? I'm gasping from fear I know can't take me there [Chorus]

  • 2) Your touch is more, Than the physical sense. It's far more intense; It's pure, secure. More than a feeling, spiritually speaking, just what I'm needing. Can't fight, I'm caught, I'm conflicted. It's lives apart, I'm addicted. And now I'm short on breathe. Lungs are constricting. Gasping from fear I know can't take me there.

[Chorus] I need air. I just wanna live again. A little air.

Maybe I can love again. I need air. So I can breathe again.

Our young men cry. Not only young men. Many of us.

Men and women. Children. Teens.

Especially those who are seen as a posse whenever they gather as 11 or 12 or 13 together. Somebody looks at them with fear or hostility and wonders, what are THEY doing here. Positioned behind that leader, in support of him, in defense of him.

At least that’s how some still see us, well see them. Not me. For unlike me, leaders like Jesus or followers like Peter might well feel most unwelcome in many of the places that might be like the temple mount in Jerusalem. Say Highland Park or Preston Hollow or Southlake.

Young men. Like the ones just heard. Or the ones we saw in the video earlier. Even if they call Jesus their Rabbi. And sing about Jesus. Even if Jesus calls them his disciples, his followers. In certain places they are not seen as friends of Jesus, as children of God. They are seen as Peter and Jesus sometimes were. As a threat. As a danger.

And any church. Any movement. Needs people like these young men desperately.

And not just the young men. All of us. No matter what others say about us or to us. Jesus knew this. Knows this. What we can do.

What GOD can do. What God WILL do. When we as followers say. Forgive Me, Lord. Save Me, Lord. I need Air. Help me breathe. Lead Me, Lord. Guide Me, Lord.

When we need Air. And we know we need Air. And we say, Help me Lord. Save me, Lord. God does. And then. We can Wade ON the Water … knowing …

Soonah will be done-ah wit’ de troubles of de world ... ‘cause I ain’t gonna let nobody turn me ‘round. I’m goin’ home to live with God.

I need air. And then I see that hand reaching out and grabbing mine and saying. I’m here. Breathe my child. I need air. And then I see that hand of Jesus reaching out and grabbing mine and saying. I’m here. Breathe my child.

Come and walk with me on the waves. Wade with me. On the water.

J) THIRD SONG: Wade In the Water, led by Cynthia Liggins Thomas (2018) and The Sunset Four Jubilee Singers (1925)

GREAT THANKSGIVING & Preface by #7

Please UNMute & RESPOND

The Lord be with you,

AND ALSO WITH YOU

Lift up your hearts

WE LIFT THEM TO THE LORD!

Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE OUR THANKS AND PRAISE.

It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, Holy Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so with the Church on Earth and all the hosts of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord, or You Are Holy, led by Pastor Todd

Please MUTE & SING:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD, Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, in the highest.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION & Lord's Prayer, led by #7

The Words of Institution are recorded for us in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke as well as by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:

  • “Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: ‘Take and eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.’

  • “In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: ‘Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is shed for you and for all people, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.'”

When the disciples didn't know how to PRAY in the face of the challenges ahead of them, they asked Jesus for help. He said, "Pray this way!" Will you share with me the Lord's Prayer?

Please UNMute & RESPOND

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Lamb, Of God, led by Dolphene Davis & Create in Me a Clean Heart, Oh God) led by the Acapella Company, written by Terry Talbot

Please MUTE & SING:

  1. Create in me, a clean heart, Oh God, let me be like you in all my ways. Give me your strength, teach me your song, shelter me in the shadow of your wing.

  2. For we are your righteousness. If we die to ourselves, and live through your death. We shall be born, again to be blessed in your love.

L) Post Communion Blessing & Prayer led by #7

ALL: May the body and blood of our Risen Lord, Jesus the Christ, strengthen you and keep you in His grace, now and always. Amen.

  • Let us pray. Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ’s resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of life to nourish your people. Help us to stand with Jesus as witnesses to your Son’s resurrection, that we may show your glory to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. AMEN.
