GOD'S LOVE!! ... Second Sunday in Advent

10:45 - Leader's Meeting

11:00 - Coffee Hour in 11 Minutes

(Sip your coffee and discuss Isaiah 40 or Mark 1 or 1 Corinthians 13 ... and how God might reach a Wide Range of People through us during this season of Advent ... or what does COMPANIONSHIP mean for you during this interesting Holiday Season?)

11:11 - WORSHIP BEGINS

A) FIRST LESSON: Oh, Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel, verses 1 & 2, by Pastor Todd (through 2:29 only)

ISAIAH 40:1-11 read by #1

Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.

A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” A voice says, “Cry out!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him:

He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.

B) On Jordan's Banks the Baptist's Cry, led by Canto Deo Choirs, a Denver Community Choir, Performed at Bethany Lutheran Church, Cherry Hills Village, CO

C) SECOND LESSONS: 1 Corinthians 13, led by #2 & #3
  • 2) If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

  • 3) Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.

But the greatest of these is love.

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks Be to God!!

C) SECOND CANDLE: HOPE & LOVE, song written & led by Richard Bruxvoort Colligan, played ONLY until 1:30

Skit Guys - Two Professional Christian Performers

D) MESSAGE for the YOUNG at HEART, led by Yarlette Bryant, Sydney Brown and the gifted Goffney Girls
E) KYRIE, led by Carlos Leggett
  • In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

  • For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

  • For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

  • For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

  • Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

Amen.

E) LITURGY & PRAYER led by #3 & #4
  • 3) The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

AND ALSO WITH YOU

  • 4) We gather together and share a CREED to remember that in God, we have a Companion who will never fail us and will be with us always. It is a CREED that reminds us that death is never the final answer, and the hope springs eternal for those who follow the God of Resurrection and Life.

I BELIEVE IN GOD, THE FAITHER ALMIGHTY

Creator of heaven and earth.

I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST,

God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT,

the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

3) Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. (1 John 4:7-9)

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,

but to save the world through him. (John 3:16)

  • 4) We take this moment to confess our sins: Do you confess that you are captive to sin and cannot free yourself from this trap of sin and death, at least not in this life? Do you confess that you have sinned against God in anger, rebellion, frustration, doubt and fear.

WE DO.

  • 3) Do you confess that, because your neighbor fails to love in the way that God commands, that you also have not loved your neighbor as yourself? Do you confess that you struggle to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength?

WE DO.

  • 4) Do you ask, with the help of Jesus Christ, Forgive us, Lord, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

WE DO. AMEN.

  • 3) Brothers and sisters hear this grace: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you and for His sake, God forgives you all of your sins. As a called disciple of Christ I declare the entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN.

B) GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 1:1-8, led by #6

Halle, Halle, Halle-lujah, led by Tanya Browne & Dolphene Davis

Our Gospel Lesson comes from Mark in the 1st Chapter.

GLORY TO YOU, O LORD!

5) The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:

“I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”— “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”

And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

PRAISE TO YOU, OH CHRIST

GREAT THANKSGIVING & Preface by #7

Please UNMute & RESPOND

The Lord be with you,

AND ALSO WITH YOU

Lift up your hearts

WE LIFT THEM TO THE LORD!

Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE OUR THANKS AND PRAISE.

It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, Holy Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so with the Church on Earth and all the hosts of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord, led by Pastor Todd

Please MUTE & SING:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD, Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, in the highest.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION & Lord's Prayer, led by #7

The Words of Institution are recorded for us in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke as well as by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:

  • “Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: ‘Take and eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.’

  • “In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: ‘Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is shed for you and for all people, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.'”

When the disciples didn't know how to PRAY in the face of the challenges ahead of them, they asked Jesus for help. He said, "Pray this way!" Will you share with me the Lord's Prayer?

Please UNMute & RESPOND

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

1) Lamb, Of God, led by Dolphene Davis
2) Of the Father's Love Begotten, led by Michael Lining

Please MUTE & SING:

* AND *

  • 2) Of the Father's love begotten, ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the Source, the Ending he, Of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see, Evermore and evermore!

  • O that birth forever blessed, when the Virgin, full of grace, By the Holy Ghost conceiving, bore the Savior of our race; And the babe, the world's Redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, Evermore and evermore!

  • O ye heights of heav'n, adore him; angel hosts, his praises sing: Powers, dominions, bow before him, and extol our God and King; Let no tongue on earth be silent, ev'ry voice in concert ring, Evermore and evermore!

  • Christ, to thee, with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost, to thee, Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving, and unwearied praises be, Honor, glory, and dominion, and eternal victory, Evermore and evermore!

DIVINUM MYSTERIUM is one of the oldest melodies in the Christian tradition - first published in Petri's Piae Cantiones (1582), but dating from the 1200s from a plainchant. This arrangement features the plainchant in unison on verse 1, plainchant with a cantus firmus (a top line usually sung in fifths and resolving to unisons or fifths) in verse 2, and 4 part harmony on verses 3-4; but still retaining several open fifths and octaves on key cadences. The text was written by Aurelius Prudentius in the 300s AD, after the council of Nicea established the Church's official stance on the nature of the Trinity. The belief in the trinity is established in the hymn's opening lines, and its affirmed that Christ is both human and divine.

L) Post Communion Blessing & Prayer led by #7

ALL: May the body and blood of our Risen Lord, Jesus the Christ, strengthen you and keep you in His grace, now and always. Amen.

  • Let us pray. Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ’s resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of life to nourish your people. Help us to stand with Jesus as witnesses to your Son’s resurrection, that we may show your glory to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. AMEN.

POSTLUDE 1: Lo How a Rose is Blooming/The Rose, led by St. Olaf Choirs, Oslo, Norway or led by University of Utah Singers

Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming, From tender stem hath sprung!

Some say love, it is a river, that drowns the tender reed

Of Jesse's lineage coming, As men of old have sung

Some say love, it is a razor, that leaves your soul to bleed

It came a flow'ret bright,

Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need

Amid the cold of winter,

I say love, it is a flower, and you, its only seed

When half spent was the night

It's the heart afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance It's the dream afraid of waking, that never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give And the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live

O flow'r, whose fragrance tender, With sweetness fills the air

When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long

Dispel in glorious splendour, The darkness ev'ry where

And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong

True man yet very God

Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows

From sin and death now save us

Lies the seed, that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose

And share our ev'ry load
