LIGHT: Do You SEE what I SEE ... Epiphany Sunday

10:45 - Leader's Meeting

11:00 - Coffee Hour in 11 Minutes

(Sip your coffee and discuss Mark 1 or Luke 4 or Luke 6 ... and how God might reach a Wide Range of People through us during this season of Epiphany ... or what does COMPANIONSHIP mean for you during this unfathomable New Year?)

11:11 - WORSHIP BEGINS

A) PRELUDE: Do You Hear What I Hear? featuring Whitney Houston and performed by Pentatonix, an Arlington based acappella YouTube recording phenomenon that won the televised talent show 'The Sing Off"
  1. Said the night wind to the little lamb, Do you see what I see? Way up in the sky, little lamb, Do you see what I see? A star, a star, dancing in the night, With a tail as big as a kite, (repeat last phrase)

  2. Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy, Do you hear what I hear? Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy, Do you hear what I hear? A song, a song high above the trees, With a voice as big as the sea, (repeat last phrase)

  3. Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king, Do you know what I know? In your palace warm, mighty king, Do you know what I know? A Child, a Child shivers in the cold, Let us bring him silver and gold, (repeat last phrase)

  4. Said the king to the people everywhere, Listen to what I say! Pray for peace, people, everywhere, Listen to what I say! The Child, the Child sleeping in the night, He will bring us goodness and light (repeat last phrase)

B) BEATTITUDES: LUKE 6:20-26 read by #1 & #2
  • 1) WITH A MOTHER'S LOVE: Looking at his disciples, [Jesus] said: “BLESSED are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. BLESSED are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. BLESSED are you who weep now, for you will laugh. BLESSED are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

REJOICE in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.

  • 2) WITH A FATHER'S ANGER: "But WOE to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. WOE to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. WOE to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. WOE to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.

ONE THING I started to SEE this WEEK that I Hadn't Seen:

APOSTLE PHILIP: Every DAY, every WEEK that we do not intentionally practice COMPANIONSHIP with God's Children who are somehow Different that we are ... we have UNintentially Sown Seeds of Segregation into the Family of God. When we think it is WE who are the BLESSED, we'd need to listen again to the WOE. For being BLESSED means we have something important to SHARE. And WOE to us all when we WITHOLD what God wants us to SHARE. Philip was perhaps the first Apostle to take DEsegregation of the Gospel seriously. More about that on Wednesday.

B1) FIRST HYMN: God of Love, We've Know Division, text by Carolyn Winfrey Gilletteto the tune of Lord Whose Love in Humble Service (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWdgGOd-VYg)
B2) Alternate First Hymn: (Light of the World) Here I Am to Worship, led by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, start at 0:45 ... Used only if we don't have soloist volunteer
  • Please MUTE and SING (lyrics are below)

Light of the world ...

  • You stepped down into darkness, Opened my eyes, let me see Beauty that made this heart adore You, Hope of a life spent with You

  • Here I am to worship, Here I am to bow down Here I am to say that You're my God, You're altogether lovely Altogether worthy, Altogether wonderful to me

  • King of all days, Oh so highly exalted Glorious in heaven above, Humbly You came to the earth You created All for love's sake became poor

  • I'll never know how much it cost To see my sin upon that cross

ONE THING I HEARD this WEEK that I Haven't HEARD Before:

APOSTLE PAUL: Every Sunday that we do not intentially invite another community of faith to join us in worship ... or a person from another city or state or country ... or a person from another ethnic community ... or a person from a different neighborhood ... or a person in a different economic class ... or a person with a different disability than ours ... or a different health challenge than ours ... or a different comfort with technology than ours ... we have unintentionally Sown Seeds of Segregation ... and we miss another opportunity for growing in COMPANIONSHIP this week. Paul was the next Apostle to really take DEsegregation seriously.

What is the mission of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church?

To Serve as a VEHICLE through which the Gospel is Spread!!!

In the next 6 weeks, DAY BY DAY, we will be intentional

about being a VEHICLE

C) SECOND LESSON: Mark 1:4-11, led by #3 & #4
  • 3) John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed,

  • 4) “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

  • 3) In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven,

  • 4) “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks Be to God!!

E) KYRIE, led by Carlos Leggett
  • In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

  • For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

  • For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

  • For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

  • Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

Amen.

ONE THING I struggled to REALIZE this WEEK that I Hadn't REALIZED:

CAIN & ABEL: When we do something GOOD and receive attention and affirmation for it, and somebody else is doing something BAD and doesn't get the same attention and affirmation ... sometimes they grow to HATE us, even want to HURT us and even KILL us. We may want to ask, "Why do they HATE ME? But it's not about ME at all.

E) LITURGY & PRAYER led by #5 & #6
  • 5) The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

AND ALSO WITH YOU

  • 6) We gather together and share a CREED to remember that in God, we have a Companion who will never fail us and will be with us always. It is a CREED that reminds us that death is never the final answer, and the hope springs eternal for those who follow the God of Resurrection and Life.

I BELIEVE IN GOD, THE FATHER ALMIGHTY

Creator of heaven and earth.

I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST,

God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT,

the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

  • 5) We take this moment to confess our sins: Do you confess that you are captive to sin and cannot free yourself from this trap of sin and death, at least not in this life? Do you confess that you have sinned against God in anger, rebellion, frustration, doubt and fear.

WE DO.

  • 6) Do you confess that, because your neighbor fails to love in the way that God commands, that you also have not loved your neighbor as yourself? Do you confess that you struggle to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength?

WE DO.

  • 5) Do you ask, with the help of Jesus Christ, Forgive us, Lord, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

WE DO. AMEN.

  • 6) Brothers and sisters hear this grace: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you and for His sake, God forgives you all of your sins. As a called disciple of Christ I declare the entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN.

F) GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 4:14-15, led by #7 & #8

Halle, Halle, Halle-lujah, led by Tanya Browne & Dolphene Davis

Our Gospel Lesson comes from Luke in the 4th Chapter.

GLORY TO YOU, O LORD!

  • 7) Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

  • 8) “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

  • 7) Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them,

  • 8) “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

  • 7) All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.

  • 8) Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.' Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown. I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed —only Naaman the Syrian.”

  • 7) WITH ANGER: All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.

  • 8) PAUSE FIRST, then CONTINUE GENTLY: But [Jesus] walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

PRAISE TO YOU, OH CHRIST

ONE FACEBOOK PAGE I'VE SEEN CHANGED WHAT I WAS SEEING

DEBORAH PRINCIPLE: Much of Today's service was gleaned from Pastor Angie Shannon's Facebook Page. Like the first song and this next song. Pastor Angie served at King of Glory in North Dallas before accepting a call to All Saints Parish in Maryland, in the Metro DC area. When I told my wife, she just laughed. I said, "What?". She said, "Figures. The white man gets a woman of color to do his work for him." It's been a tough week for all of us. I laughed. And later said, "That's right, I do that a lot, don't I? Get women of color to do my work for me?" Then I looked her in the eyes and said, "Part of that's because, 9 out 10 times, y'all do it a whole lot better than I do." I think it's important for a man to know his place. In Judges, Barak did, as he followed the lead of Deborah. On the other hand, I don't know if John the Baptist did.

The Lord be with you,

AND ALSO WITH YOU

Lift up your hearts

WE LIFT THEM TO THE LORD!

Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE OUR THANKS AND PRAISE.

It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, Holy Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so with the Church on Earth and all the hosts of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn.

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD, Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, in the highest.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION & Lord's Prayer, led by #7

The Words of Institution are recorded for us in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke as well as by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:

  • “Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: ‘Take and eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.’

  • “In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: ‘Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is shed for you and for all people, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.'”

When the disciples didn't know how to PRAY in the face of the challenges ahead of them, they asked Jesus for help. He said, "Pray this way!" Will you share with me the Lord's Prayer?

Please UNMute & RESPOND

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

1) Lamb, Of God, led by Dolphene Davis
