TRUSTWORTHINESS is the Breakfast of CHAMPIONS

Psalm 65:9-13 read by #1

9 You visit the earth and water it, you greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; you provide the people with WHEAT, for so you have prepared it. 10 You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, and blessing its growth. 11 You crown the year with your bounty; your wagon tracks overflow with richness. 12 The pastures of the wilderness overflow with WHEAT, the hills gird themselves with joy,

13 the meadows clothe themselves with flocks,

the valleys deck themselves with GRAIN,

they shout and sing together for joy.

B) FIRST LESSON: Genesis 28:10-19a, led by #2
  • 10 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. 11 He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. 12 And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And the Lord stood beside him and said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; 14 and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. 15 Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."

  • 16 Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place -— and I did not know it!" 17 And he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." 18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He called that place Bethel; but the name of the city was Luz.

This is the Word of the Lord.

THANKS BE TO GOD.

D) MESSAGE for the YOUNG at HEART, led by Yarlette Bryant, Sydney Brown and the gifted Goffney Girls
E) LITURGY & PRAYER led by #3 & #4
  • 3) The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

AND ALSO WITH YOU

  • 4) We gather together and share a CREED to remember that in God, we have a Companion who will never fail us and will be with us always. It is a CREED that reminds us that death is never the final answer, and the hope springs eternal for those who follow the God of Resurrection and Life.

I BELIEVE IN GOD,

the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST,

God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT,

the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

  • 3) We take this moment to confess our sins: Do you confess that you are captive to sin and cannot free yourself from this trap of sin and death, at least not in this life? Do you confess that you have sinned against God in anger, rebellion, frustration, doubt and fear.

WE DO.

  • 4) Do you confess that, because your neighbor fails to love in the way that God commands, that you also have not loved your neighbor as yourself? Do you confess that you struggle to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength?

WE DO.

  • 3) Do you ask, with the help of Jesus Christ, Forgive us, Lord, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

WE DO. AMEN.

  • 4) Brothers and sisters hear this grace: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you and for His sake, God forgives you all of your sins. As a called disciple of Christ I declare the entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN.

F) GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 13:24-30, 36-41, read by #5 & #6

Our Gospel Lesson comes from the Matthew in the 13th Chapter.

GLORY TO YOU, O LORD!

Halle, Halle, Halle-lujah, led by Tanya Browne & Dolphene Davis

  • (5) He put before them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good WHEAT in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the WHEAT, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the WEEDS appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, "Master, did you not sow good WHEAT in your field? Where, then, did these WEEDS come from?' He answered, "An ENEMY has done this.' The slaves said to him, "Then do you want us to go and gather them?' But he replied, "No; for in gathering the WEEDS you would uproot the WHEAT along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the WEEDS first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the WHEAT into my barn.'"

  • (6) Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the WEEDS of the field." He answered, "The one who sows the good WHEAT is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good WHEAT is the children of the kingdom; the WEEDS are the children of the evil one, and the ENEMY who sowed them is the ADVERSARY; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the WEEDS are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of SIN and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

PRAISE TO YOU, O CHRIST.

G) SECOND SONG: Hold On, Just a Little While Longer, led by the Kuumba Singers & Bobby McFerrin in Leipzig, Germany (the home of Johann Sebastian Bach)
  • Hold on just a little while longer Hold on just a little while longer Hold on just a little while longer Everything will be alright Everything will be alright

  • Pray on just a little while longer

  • Fight on just a little while longer

  • You know you gotta sing on (Just a little while longer) (Sing on just a little while longer) (Sing on just a little while longer) (Everything will be alright) (Everything will be alright)

H) SERMON: WHEAT, TRUST, GRACE ... is the Breakfast of Champions

TRUST IS THE BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS.

But TRUST can be one of the hardest of assets to hang onto.

  • I think that’s what Jesus is getting at in this passage in Matthew. He uses the word ENEMY to talk about the opposite of trustworthiness. Our enemy is one we believe we cannot trust. They are not trust worthy.

  • Jesus uses the word WEEDS to talk about what the lack of trust grows. Hate. Enmity. Fear. Anxiety. Distaste. Disgust. And just as quickly as weeds can grow in a field, DISTRUST can poison a relationship.

  • Jesus probably used an Aramaic word close to the Hebrew word for enemy. OYEB. More than enemy, OYEB means foe. One to whom we are opposed. An opponent more than an enemy.

  • But the word used in the original manuscripts of Matthew is ECHTHROS. In Greek tragedies there was a PHILOS. A friend. Like in PHILODELPHIA. City of brotherly love. A friend. PHILOS. The protagonist. And then there was the antagonist. The enemy. The ECHTHROS. The one who sowed the weeds. The one who caused the trouble. The one who was to blame.

  • And then there was the MEDETOEROS. The neither. Not on one side or the other. They were the Greek Chorus. They weren’t supposed to take sides.

  • In fact the whole story was performed for the Greek Chorus to judge. Which of the two major characters is really the friend. The PHILOS. And which is the enemy. The ECHTHROS. Which one CAN be trusted? Which one SHOULD be trusted?

What question might you want to ask your Grandma or Grandpa?

To older generations:

  • What’s your favorite memory from when you were my age?

  • Who made a big impact on your life when you were my age?

To younger generations:

  • What’s the best thing that happened to you this week?

  • If you had all the time in the world and money was no object, what would you like to do?

  • Do you have a picture of a place where you feel a lot of joy? Would you show me?

J) THIRD SONG: Put Your Trust in Jesus, led by the Mississippi Mass Choir

Please MUTE and SING along

  • Why don’t you put your trust in Jesus, (Everything will be alright) be alright, (He will make your pathway easy) easy, (And your burdens will be light) will be light. All you gotta do is have little faith (I know my God will make a way)

  • Why don't you put your... put your... Trust in Jesus … Jesus ... He will make everything alright.

  • Ole Job was sick so long until the flesh fell from Job's bones. Job's wife, carried all of Job's children, everything Job had it was gone. He said, "Lord, You put these afflictions upon me. Why don't you come on Lord, come on see about me"? Job trusted in the Lord, yes, He made everything alright.

  • Put your trust in Jesus, He will make everything alright. O put your trust in Jesus, He will make everything alright. Just put your trust in Jesus, He will make everything alright.

GREAT THANKSGIVING & Preface by #7

Please UNMute & RESPOND

The Lord be with you,

AND ALSO WITH YOU

Lift up your hearts

WE LIFT THEM TO THE LORD!

Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE OUR THANKS AND PRAISE.

It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, Holy Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so with the Church on Earth and all the hosts of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord, or You Are Holy, led by Pastor Todd

Please MUTE & SING:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD, Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, in the highest.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION & Lord's Prayer, led by #7

The Words of Institution are recorded for us in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke as well as by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:

  • “Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: ‘Take and eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.’

  • “In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: ‘Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is shed for you and for all people, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.'”

When the disciples didn't know how to PRAY in the face of the challenges ahead of them, they asked Jesus for help. He said, "Pray this way!" Will you share with me the Lord's Prayer?

Please UNMute & RESPOND

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Lamb, Of God, led by Dolphene Davis & He Looked Beyond My Faults and Saw My Need, led by Tanya Browne

Please MUTE & SING:

L) Post Communion Blessing & Prayer led by #7

ALL: May the body and blood of our Risen Lord, Jesus the Christ, strengthen you and keep you in His grace, now and always. Amen.

  • Let us pray. Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ’s resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of life to nourish your people. Help us to stand with Jesus as witnesses to your Son’s resurrection, that we may show your glory to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. AMEN.
