A Holy Homecoming: BOTH an Easter AND a Good Friday

1 CORINTHIANS 9:19-23 (read by #4)

(The Message - MSG)

Even though I am free of the demands and expectations of everyone, I have voluntarily BECOME A SERVANT to any and all in order to reach a WIDE RANGE OF PEOPLE: the religious as well as the nonreligious, [the conservative as well as the progressive, the loud speakers as well as the quiet listeners, the well connected and the disconnected] -- whoever. I didn’t take on their way of life. I kept my bearings in Christ—but I ENTERED THEIR WORLD and tried to experience things from their point of view. I’ve become just about every SORT OF SERVANT there is in my attempts to lead those I meet into a God-saved life.

I did all this because of the Message.

I didn’t just want to TALK about it;

I wanted to BE IN on it!

  • I pray for you, You pray for me. I love you, I need you to survive. I won't harm you with words from my mouth. I love you, I need you to survive. (repeat 8 X)

B) FIRST LESSON: Luke 10:1-11, led by #1

The First Lesson comes from Luke, the 10th Chapter. Jesus sends out 72 followers out two by two. Each of them had a companion. And each were trained by Jesus to reach out to at least one or two other people. Jesus has commanded us to do this too ... but modern churches tend to shy away from the task. We often fear what we hear in the final verse; that we will not be welcomed.

  • After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

  • “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.

  • “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say,  ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’

This is the Word of the Lord.

PRAISE TO YOU, O CHRIST.

C) SECOND LESSON: Mark 16:9-15, led by #2

The Second Lesson comes from Mark, the 16th Chapter. Jesus has risen from the dead, but hear how hard it is for his followers to celebrate an Easter. They had seen the authorities beat and kill a friend. Yet another friend. Yet again. He gasped for breath as he died. And it wasn't the first time they had seen this and it wouldn't be the last. Perhaps it was easier for them to cling to the pain of Good Friday than hope for an Easter. But really. After what they had witnessed? Who could blame them?

  • When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it.

  • Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking in the country. These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either.

  • Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.

This is the Word of the Lord.

PRAISE TO YOU, O CHRIST.

D) MESSAGE for the YOUNG at HEART, led by Yarlette Bryant, Sydney Brown and the gifted Goffney Girls

E) LITURGY & PRAYER led by Alicia & Corey Brown
  • A) The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

AND ALSO WITH YOU

  • C) We gather together and share a CREED to remember that in God, we have a Companion who will never fail us and will be with us always. It is a CREED that reminds us that death is never the final answer, and the hope springs eternal for those who follow the God of Resurrection and Life.

I BELIEVE IN GOD,

the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST,

God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT,

the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

  • A) We take this moment to confess our sins: Do you confess that you are captive to sin and cannot free yourself from this trap of sin and death, at least not in this life? Do you confess that you have sinned against God in anger, rebellion, frustration, doubt and fear.

WE DO.

  • C) Do you confess that, because your neighbor fails to love in the way that God commands, that you also have not loved your neighbor as yourself? Do you confess that you struggle to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength?

WE DO.

  • A) Do you ask, with the help of Jesus Christ, Forgive us, Lord, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

AMEN

  • C) Brothers and sisters hear this grace: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you and for His sake, God forgives you all of your sins. As a called disciple of Christ I declare the entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN

F) GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 28:16-20, led by #3

All authority was given to Jesus. And Jesus gives that authority to us. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And then Jesus says, learn and train others. Learn and train others. Learn and train others. To set the captive free. I commission you. I authorize you. I anoint you. I baptize you. Go!! Our First Lesson comes from the Gospel of Matthew in the 28th Chapter.

GLORY TO YOU, O LORD!

Halle, Halle, Halle-lujah, led by Tanya Browne & Dolphene Davis

  • Meanwhile, the eleven disciples were on their way to Galilee, headed for the mountain Jesus had set for their reunion. The moment they saw him they worshiped him. Some, though, held back, not sure about worship, about risking themselves totally.

  • Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name:

  • Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

PRAISE TO YOU, O CHRIST.

G) SECOND SONG: Holy, Holy, Holy, (Reginald Heber) led by Carlos Leggett on vocals and trumpet and Dolphene Davis on keyboard
  • Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

  • Sing this verse with the Trumpet: Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see; Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, love, and purity

  • Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

H) Five or Six COMMENTS on Two QUESTIONS

WHAT KIND OF HOMECOMING DOES IT FEEL LIKE FOR YOU?

A) As you watch our world today,

are you reminded more of the pain and loss of a

GOOD FRIDAY MEMORIAL Service?

B) As you watch our world today, are you more convicted than ever that an EASTER MIRACLE is coming soon

... and may just be right around the corner?

  • Remember, BOTH answers are truthful, honest and tightly woven into the blessing given to a believer and follower of Jesus Christ!!

GREAT THANKSGIVING & Preface by Vetia Smith

Please UNMute & RESPOND

The Lord be with you,

AND ALSO WITH YOU

Lift up your hearts

WE LIFT THEM TO THE LORD!

Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE OUR THANKS AND PRAISE.

It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, Holy Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so with the Church on Earth and all the hosts of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord, led by Pastor Todd

Please MUTE & SING:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD, Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, in the highest.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION & Lord's Prayer, led by Vetia Smith

The Words of Institution are recorded for us in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke as well as by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:

  • “Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: ‘Take and eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.’

  • “In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: ‘Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is shed for you and for all people, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.'”

When the disciples didn't know how to PRAY in the face of the challenges ahead of them, they asked Jesus for help. He said, "Pray this way!" Will you share with me the Lord's Prayer?

Please UNMute & RESPOND

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Lamb, Of God, led by Dolphene Davis

Please MUTE & SING:

  • Let us pray. Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ’s resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of life to nourish your people. Help us to stand with Jesus as witnesses to your Son’s resurrection, that we may show your glory to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. AMEN.
