We Serve as a Vehicle through which the Gospel of Jesus Christ is spread.
WE SHALL OVERCOME: Seventh Sunday of Easter
10:45 - Leader's Meeting
11:00 - Coffee Hour in 11 Minutes
(Sip your coffee and discuss Exodus 40 and the writings of St. John ... and how God might reach a Wide Range of People through us during the 50 Day, 8 Sunday season of Easter ... or what does COMPANIONSHIP mean for you for the final three quarters of 2021?)
11:11 - WORSHIP BEGINS
153 Years Ago Today: Reconstruction kind of started ...
Or did it?
On May 9, 1868:
President Andrew Johnson was acquitted during the Senate impeachment, by one vote.
1) Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
ALL: You Shall Overcome
2) On the first day of the first month you shall set up the tabernacle of the tent of meeting. You shall put the ark of the testimony in it and screen the ark with the veil. You shall bring in the table and arrange the things that are to be arranged on it, and you shall bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps. You shall set the gold altar of incense before the ark of the testimony and put the curtain for the entrance to the tabernacle.
ALL: You Shall Overcome
1) You shall set the altar of the burnt offering in front of the entrance of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting. You shall set the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it. You shall set up the courtyard around it and hang up the curtain at the courtyard gate. You shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it and shall consecrate it and all its furnishings, and it shall be holy. Then you shall anoint the altar of the burnt offering and all its utensils, and consecrate the altar, and the altar shall be most holy. 11 You shall anoint the basin and its stand, and consecrate it.
ALL: You Shall Overcome
2) Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting and wash them with water. You shall put the holy garments on Aaron and anoint him and consecrate him, so that he may minister to Me as a priest. You shall bring his sons and clothe them with tunics. Then you shall anoint them just as you anointed their father, so that they may minister to Me as priests, for their anointing will surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations. Thus Moses did. According to all that the Lord commanded him, so he did.
ALL: You Shall Overcome
C) First Hymn: We Shall Overcome, produced by professor Larry Watson and led by Berklee students and faculty, celebrating Harry Belafonte's life and music in concert at the Berklee Performance Center. Belafonte was awarded an honorary doctorate by Berklee president Roger H. Brown.

D) I've Got the Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy down in My Heart, led by Tanay Browne, heading into our MESSAGE for the YOUNG at HEART, a special edition for the EASTER Season.
E) KYRIE, led by Carlos Leggett
In peace, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
Amen.
5) The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
AND ALSO WITH YOU
6) We gather together and share a CREED to remember that in God, we have a Companion who will never fail us and will be with us always. It is a CREED that reminds us that death is never the final answer, and the hope springs eternal for those who follow the God of Resurrection and Life.
I BELIEVE IN GOD, THE FATHER ALMIGHTY
Creator of heaven and earth.
I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST,
God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT,
the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
5) We take this moment to confess our sins: Do you confess that you are captive to sin and cannot free yourself from this trap of sin and death, at least not in this life? Do you confess that you have sinned against God in anger, rebellion, frustration, doubt and fear.
WE DO.
6) Do you confess that, because your neighbor fails to love in the way that God commands, that you also have not loved your neighbor as yourself? Do you confess that you struggle to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength?
WE DO.
5) Do you ask, with the help of Jesus Christ, Forgive us, Lord, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.
WE DO. AMEN.
6) Brothers and sisters hear this grace: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you and for His sake, God forgives you all of your sins. As a called disciple of Christ I declare the entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
AMEN.
5) The peace of Christ be with you always.
AND ALSO WITH YOU.
6) We will now switch to Gallery View. As forgiven sinners, please share the peace with somebody on this call, using their name.
PEACE BE WITH YOU.
F) Gospel Lesson: JOHN 17:6-12, 17-19, led by #7
Halle, Halle, Halle-lujah, led by Tanya Browne & Dolphene Davis
Our Gospel Lesson comes from John 17th Chapter.
GLORY TO YOU, O LORD!
7) "I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them.
And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
PRAISE TO YOU, OH CHRIST
H) SECOND SONG: Be An Overcomer - an old Church of God Hymn led by an Anabaptist, Amish, Mennonite Church; Be An Overcomer - led by the Bethel National Choir, West Bromwich, Birmingham; Be An Overcomer - led the Hoppers on the Bill Gaither Vocal Band show

J) SERMON: "We Shall Overcome" shared by Pastor Todd
Our church started when two women were sent to the BASEMENT because of the color of their skin. They were Lutherans. They walked to the Lutheran church that was closest to their home. But they were REFUSED access to the sanctuary. They were sent to the basement. And they were not offered communion.
Our church started because TWO WOMEN expected more from a Christian church. They PETITIONED the district office. If all beloved children of God were not wanted in the nearest Lutheran church, they would help build a church where all beloved children of God were welcome. And Mt. Olive was born.
Our church grew and became a VITAL NEIGHBOR in our community. But some of our neighbors didn’t want to live or worship near these two Lutheran women, or their friends, or their family. And they moved out. They even SOLD their church so they could worship somewhere else.
And Mt. Olive BOUGHT the building. The two women helped purchase the very Sanctuary where once they had not been welcomed. And we bought back the basement to which they had been consigned. And we made a COVENANT to use these rooms, and the building in back, to reach out to the community with one message. We are ALL beloved children of God. And all beloved children of God have an honored place at God’s table.
Through the ensuing years this has been TESTED many times. Are the hungry welcome? The homeless? The unmarried? The divorced? The disabled? The mentally ill? The rich? The poor? The young? The old? Those who are white? Those who are brown, but not black? Those who are left out, locked out, CLOSED OUT for any reason?
Like any church we often had to WRESTLE with our prejudices as we discerned how to STAY TRUE to the mission God has given us: All beloved children of God have an honored place at our table.
Often, we found, OVERCOMING our prejudices led us into a new ministry we weren’t sure how we could afford. But God opened door after door.
When most church doors in Dallas were closed to Martin Luther King, Jr., he was WELCOMED here. After his assassination, when his organization, the SCLC, needed a temporary office, they were welcomed here. Bomb threats didn’t dissuade. BRIDGES needed to be built, and our basement had become a bridge. The basement even housed the first food pantry in Dallas. The food we share in our Blessing Bags with our neighbors on the street is still stored here. The bags are assembled and prayed over here.
1) It is true. Most of our members also MOVED AWAY from Fair Park and South Dallas over time. As God blessed us financially we invested in homes elsewhere, with greater property value. So we CONFESS. We have been a part of the problem our neighborhood faces too.
2) But for those of us who remain at Mt. Olive, this neighborhood is and always will be OUR HOME. It is where our heart is. It is where God placed us.
3) There are TOO FEW of us now to successfully persist in our mission. IMPORTANT CHOICES need to be made. Some of us are moving back to the community to allow us to make a deeper investment. Others of us are commuting 2 to 3 times a week so we can still invest in our neighborhood in more meaningful ways. But we know, without a miracle, it is too little, too late. 4) Thankfully, we BELIEVE IN MIRACLES. And we believe in you. And we believe God still intends to open door after door in South Dallas.
5) So. Will you come and VISIT US in Fair Park and see why we love our South Dallas community so much? Will you come and meet our neighbors and help God write the next chapter of the Mt. Olive story?
6) The MISSION of Mount Olive Lutheran Church is: To serve as a vehicle through which the gospel is spread. To serve as a vehicle through which good news is shared in real and tangible ways. We can’t wait to see what kind of VEHICLE God may be fashioning through you, too. Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING & Preface by #8
Please UNmute & RESPOND
The Lord be with you,
AND ALSO WITH YOU
Lift up your hearts
WE LIFT THEM TO THE LORD!
Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.
IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE OUR THANKS AND PRAISE.
It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, Holy Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so with the Church on Earth and all the hosts of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn.
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord, led by Pastor Todd
Please MUTE & SING:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD, Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, in the highest.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION & Lord's Prayer, led by #8
The Words of Institution are recorded for us in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke as well as by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:
“Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: ‘Take and eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.’
“In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: ‘Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is shed for you and for all people, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.'”
When the disciples didn't know how to PRAY in the face of the challenges ahead of them, they asked Jesus for help. He said, "Pray this way!" Will you share with me the Lord's Prayer?
Please UNMute & RESPOND
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Come to the Resurrection Banquet, for all is ready. We have journeyed for 40 days from Ashes and Dust to Resurrection and an Empty Tomb during Lent, and we continue that journey for 50 days from Easter to Pentecost:
We remember that we are Dust and to Dust we shall Return. But, Alleluia!!
The Body of Christ is Broken for Me. Alleluia!! The Blood of Christ is Shed for Me. And our God of Resurrection brings to life even that which once was dead. Alleluia!! May the Spirit of God bring the gift of Resurrection into our lives, into our families, into our church, into our community, and into our country. Amen.
1) Lamb, Of God, led by Dolphene Davis
Please MUTE & SING:
1) Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us (repeat) ... Lamb of God, you take away, the sins of the world, grant us peace ... grant us peace.
M) Post Communion Blessing & Prayer led by #8
ALL: May the body and blood of our Risen Lord, Jesus the Christ, strengthen you and keep you in His grace, now and always. Amen.
Let us pray. Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ’s resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of life to nourish your people. Help us to stand with Jesus as witnesses to your Son’s resurrection, that we may show your glory to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. AMEN.
N) BENEDICTION: Believe For It - led by CeCe Winans in an Acoustic One Take
They say this mountain can't be moved, They say these chains will never break But they don't know You like we do, There is power in Your name
We've heard that there is no way through, We've heard the tide will never change They haven't seen what You can do, There is power in Your name So much power in Your name,
Move the immovable, Break the unbreakable, God, we believe, God, we believe for it From the impossible, We'll see a miracle, God, we believe God, we believe for it
We know that hope is never lost, For there is still an empty grave, God, we believe, no matter what, There is power in Your name, So much power in Your name
You are the way when there seems to be no way, We trust in You, God, You have the final say (You are the way when there seems to be no way) yes, You are
(We trust in You, God, You have the final say) (You are the way, You say)
