A) FIRST SONG: Just a Closer Walk With Thee, led by Mahalia Jackson
  1. Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it, Lord if you please, Daily walking close with Thee, Let it be, dear Lord; Lord, let it be,

  2. I am weak, but Thou are strong, Jesus, keep me from all wrong, I'll be satisfied as long, As I can walk, dear Lord, close with Thee

  3. When my feeble life is o'er, Time for me won't be no more, oh won't you, guide me gently o'er, to thy Kingdom's shore, thy Kingdom's shore?

B) FIRST LESSON: 1 Peter 1:17-23, led by Holli Cook
  • 17 You call out to God for help and he helps—he’s a good Father that way. But don’t forget, he’s also a responsible Father, and won’t let you get by with sloppy living.

  • 18-21 Your life is a journey you must travel with a deep consciousness of God. It cost God plenty to get you out of that dead-end, empty-headed life you grew up in. He paid with Christ’s sacred blood, you know. He died like an unblemished, sacrificial lamb. And this was no afterthought. Even though it has only lately—at the end of the ages—become public knowledge, God always knew he was going to do this for you. It’s because of this sacrificed Messiah, whom God then raised from the dead and glorified, that you trust God, that you know you have a future in God.

  • 22-25 Now that you’ve cleaned up your lives by following the truth, love one another as if your lives depended on it. Your new life is not like your old life. Your old birth came from mortal sperm; your new birth comes from God’s living Word. Just think: a life conceived by God himself! That’s why the prophet said, The old life is a grass life, its beauty as short-lived as wildflowers; Grass dries up, flowers droop, God’s Word goes on and on forever. This is the Word that conceived the new life in you

C) MESSAGE for the YOUNG at HEART, led by Yarlette Bryant

D) LITURGY & PRAYER led by Alicia Brown & Corey BrownAlissia Barge and Josh Bowens

A) The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

  • AND ALSO WITH YOU

C) We gather together and share a CREED to remember that in God, we have a Companion who will never fail us and will be with us always. Will you share with me the Apostle's Creed?:

  1. I BELIEVE IN GOD, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

  2. I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

  3. I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

A) We take this moment to confess our sins: Do you confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. That we have sinned against God in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.

  • WE DO.

C) Do you confess that we have not loved God with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

  • WE DO

A) For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

  • AMEN

C) In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you and for His sake, God forgives you all of your sins. As a called disciple of Christ I declare the entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

  • AMEN

A) Let us pray. O God, your Son makes himself known to all his disciples in the breaking of bread. Open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming work, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN.

  • Let us pray. O God, your Son makes himself known to all his disciples in the breaking of bread. Open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming work, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN.

E) GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 24:13-35, led by Alissia Barge & Josh Bowens

The Holy Gospel according to Luke, the 24th Chapter. GLORY TO YOU, O LORD!

  • (A) 13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, "What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?" They stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?"

  • (J) 19 He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22 Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23 and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him."

  • (A) 25 Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?" 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. 28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went in to stay with them.

  • (J) 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?" 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!"

  • (A) 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The Gospel of the Lord. PRAISE TO YOU, O CHRIST.

F) The Old Rugged Cross, SECOND SONG led by Tanya Browne

Please MUTE & SING

  1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suffering and shame, And I love that old cross where the dearest and best, For a world of lost sinners was slain, So I'll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down, And I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it some day for a crown

  2. To the old rugged cross I will ever be true, It's shame and reproach gladly bear, Then he'll call me someday to my home far away, Where his glory forever I'll share, And I'll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down, And I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it some day for a crown
