Were You There When He Rose Up From the Tomb, Kaitlyn Bruning

MARK 16:1-5 read by Jackie Leatch

  • 1-3 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so they could embalm him. Very early on Sunday morning, as the sun rose, they went to the tomb. They worried out loud to each other, “Who will roll back the stone from the tomb for us?” 4-5 Then they looked up, saw that it had been rolled back—it was a huge stone—and walked right in. They saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed all in white. They were completely taken aback, astonished.

Then QUIETLY ...

Alleluia, Christ is Risen.

HE IS RISEN INDEED, ALLELUIA

I'm still Standing,

STANDING ON THE PROMISES OF GOD.

Glory, Glory, Hallelujah!! Since I Laid My Burdens Down, Drake & The Goffney/Brown Quartet

LUKE 24:4-8 read by Marie Levier

  • 4-8 They were puzzled, wondering what to make of this. Then, out of nowhere it seemed, two men, light cascading over them, stood there. The women were awestruck and bowed down in worship. The men said, “Why are you looking for the Living One in a cemetery? He is not here, but raised up. Remember how he told you when you were still back in Galilee that he had to be handed over to sinners, be killed on a cross, and in three days rise up?”

  • Then they remembered Jesus’ words.

Now, a TINY BIT LOUDER ...

Alleluia, Christ is Risen.

HE IS RISEN INDEED, ALLELUIA

I'm still Standing,

STANDING ON THE PROMISES OF GOD.

Revelation 19:1, Hallelujah, Salvation & Glory, Corey, Alicia, & Sydney Brown

MATTHEW 28:8-10, LUKE 24:11-12 read by Marie Levier

  • 8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

  • Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them kept telling these things to the apostles, but the apostles didn’t believe a word of it, thought they were making it all up. 12 But Peter jumped to his feet and ran to the tomb. He stooped to look in and saw a few grave clothes, that’s all. He walked away puzzled, shaking his head.

Now, QUITE LOUDLY ...

Alleluia, Christ is Risen.

HE IS RISEN INDEED, ALLELUIA

I'm still Standing,

STANDING ON THE PROMISES OF GOD.

HYMN: Jesus Christ is Risen Today & Psalm 118, read by Pastor Todd

1 Jesus Christ is ris'n today, Alleluia! our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! who did once upon the cross Alleluia! suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for the Lord is good; God’s mercy endures forever.

2 Let Israel now declare, “God’s mercy endures forever.”

2 Hymns of praise then let us sing Alleluia! unto Christ our heav'nly King, Alleluia! who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

14 The Lord is my strength and my song, and has become my salvation.

15 Shouts of rejoicing and salvation echo in the tents of the righteous: “The right hand of the Lord acts valiantly

4 Sing we to our God above Alleluia! praise eternal as his love; Alleluia! praise him, all ye heav'nly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!

16 The right hand of the Lord is exalted! The right hand of the|Lord acts valiantly!” 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.

Alleluia by Leonard Cohen, Nikhil Bruning

JOHN 20:3-10 read by Carlos Leggett

  • 3-10 Peter and the other disciple left immediately for the tomb. They ran, neck and neck. The other disciple got to the tomb first, outrunning Peter. Stooping to look in, he saw the pieces of linen cloth lying there, but he didn’t go in. Simon Peter arrived after him, entered the tomb, observed the linen cloths lying there, and the kerchief used to cover his head not lying with the linen cloths but separate, neatly folded by itself. Then the other disciple, the one who had gotten there first, went into the tomb, took one look at the evidence, and believed. No one yet knew from the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. The disciples then went back home.

Christ is Alive by Rosa Barge & Anadeia Bowens

MATTHEW 28:11-15 read by Carlos Leggett

  • 11 While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, 13 telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

Alleluia, Carlos Leggett

JOHN 20:11-18 read by Helen Beaujour

  • 11-13 But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. As she wept, she knelt to look into the tomb and saw two angels sitting there, dressed in white, one at the head, the other at the foot of where Jesus’ body had been laid. They said to her, “Woman, why do you weep?” 13-14 “They took my Master,” she said, “and I don’t know where they put him.” After she said this, she turned away and saw Jesus standing there. But she didn’t recognize him. 15 Jesus spoke to her, “Woman, why do you weep? Who are you looking for?” She, thinking that he was the gardener, said, “Mister, if you took him, tell me where you put him so I can care for him.”

  • 16 Jesus said, “Mary.”

  • Turning to face him, she said in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” meaning “Teacher!” 17 Jesus said, “Don’t cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I ascend to my Father and your Father, my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went, telling the news to the disciples: “I saw the Master!” And she told them everything he said to her.”

Hallelujah, We Sing Your Praises, Pastor Jamie Bruning

LUKE 28:13-18 read by Helen Beaujour

  • 13-16 That same day two of them were walking to the village Emmaus, about seven miles out of Jerusalem. They were deep in conversation, going over all these things that had happened. In the middle of their talk and questions, Jesus came up and walked along with them. But they were not able to recognize who he was. 17-18 He asked, “What’s this you’re discussing so intently as you walk along?” They just stood there, long-faced, like they had lost their best friend. Then one of them, his name was Cleopas, said, “Are you the only one in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard what’s happened during the last few days?”

Easter Message for Young at Heart, Yarlette Bryant

PRAYERS

7 Brief Easter Thanksgivings, led by Jackie Leatch & Pastor Todd:

So now we give Thanks, Oh Lord,

GOD'S LOVE ENDURES FOREVER

(We Sure Could Use a) Resurrection Now, by George Gagliardi, April, 2020, read by Tanya Browne & Alicia Brown

We sure could use a resurrection now, Someone to raise us up and give us life

Everywhere people are dying, You can almost hear the whole world crying

While each in their own way keep trying, To hold on ... In spite of fear and doubt

To hold on ... wonder what it's all about ... To hold on ..

Lord, we sure could use a resurrection now,

It’s Easter time again, my friends, A time to recall the familiar story

Of power, of redemption, of glory, When Jesus was raised to live again

But these days it’s feeling different, And for those of us who believe

Easter’s not just a sunny, bunny holiday, It represents a promised hope

To save us all from deep despair, In this, our darkest hour

While so many grieve

We sure could use a resurrection now, Someone to raise us up and give us life

Everywhere people are dying, You can almost hear the whole world crying

While each in their own way keep trying, To hold on ... In spite of fear and doubt

To hold on ... wonder what it's all about ... To hold on ..

Lord, we sure could use a resurrection now

The empty tomb is full of wonder, Along with oh so many questions

For that’s the kind of people that we are

But the only answer, at least for me, Is to call it God’s Great Mystery

Put your Faith in Him, And just let it go

It’s the only thing I know, That will fill an empty heart

And Lord, we sure could use a resurrection now, Someone to raise us up and give us life

Everywhere people are dying, You can almost hear the whole world crying

While each in their own way keep trying, To hold on ... In spite of fear and doubt

There’s not one thing that we can do ... wonder what it's all about ...

So dear Lord we look to you ... In spite of fear and doubt

To get us through these days somehow ... wonder what it's all about ...

So hold us Lord, and carry us through ... ‘Cause, Lord, we sure could use a resurrection now

The Briefest of Easter Reflections, by Rev. J. Todd Bruning,
  • There has never been an Easter Sunday in my lifetime that has been more like the First Easter than this Easter. That’s why we read from every single Gospel today. Because the First Easter was a lot like this Easter. Full of hope and joy. Mixed with more than a touch of fear and concern. On that first Easter there were three simple themes:

  • 1) Jesus said the Cross was coming and deliverance was coming. But almost nobody heard him. Or understood him. 2) The women who loved Jesus were a model of persistence, even before the men found their own way to persist. 3) The women were afraid and filled with joy. Just like there were a number of women tending to Jesus at the tomb, we have a lot of thoughts and feelings all jumbled up. Especially at a time like the First Easter. Especially at a time like this.

  • And that’s why Jesus says. Stay with me. Stick with me. Stand with me. And you will see. It will be okay. It will be more than okay.

  • So breathe. And know. I am here. And my plan? And it’s not only finished. It’s completed. Amen.

The Completed Song of Salome & Joanna, by Rev. J. Todd Bruning, April, 2020, read by Tanya Browne & Alicia Brown

On the cross, “It is finished,” we heard him say,

But it was completed on Easter day,

As he hung there it looked like it was the end,

But he said, “I’ll always be with you, my friend,”.

And it was completed on Easter Day,

In a way we had dared not even pray.

I couldn’t stay because my heart was rending,

I couldn’t bear the forgiveness he was sending,

On the cross, “It is completed,” he tried to tell us.

Just as he had, while lifting the chalice ...

“This cup, it bears the forgiveness of sins,

I paid the price with my broken limbs,

For eternal judgment you would have been liable,

But through this payment, grace now is viable.”

So, “It is completed,” he said on the cross,

For his death was but a momentary loss,

When the tomb opened up, he was no longer there,

For a moment we women felt great despair,

Then with these words, “He’s risen,” they were joyfully greeted,

For the angels understood when he said, “It is completed.”

It was finished, on the cross, we thought that day,

Until, “I am with you,” we again heard him say.

Every week we gather to retell the story,

How our Savior arose with such clandestine glory,

“Alleluia!” we say. “Our Lord again is living!”

A blessing that receives our perpetual thanksgiving.

Amen.

Let us pray. Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ’s resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of life to nourish your people. Help us to stand end us forth as witnesses to your Son’s resurrection, that we may show your glory to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen.

HYMN: In Christ Alone, led David Wesley Virtual A Cappella Choir

In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song

This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease, My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone! Who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe

This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save

Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied

For every sin on Him was laid, Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain

Then bursting forth in glorious Day, Up from the grave He rose again

And as He stands in victory, Sin's curse has lost its grip on me

For I am His and He is mine, Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me

From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny

No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand

Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand
